GOGO Electric, a homegrown electric mobility startup, has received a capital boost worth USD 3M from the Uganda Development Bank (UDB) aimed at expanding its electric motorcycle operations and infrastructure nationwide. The investment comes at a time when Ugandaโs commercial motorcycle sector, numbering an estimated 1.2 million riders is facing increased pressure to shift from fossil fuels to electric.
This financing package will enable GOGO to scale its assembly capacity, broaden its battery-swapping network, and introduce more rider-friendly financing models.
Through leveraging solar-powered charging stations and modular battery technology, the company is working to eliminate one of the primary obstacles in EV adoption like limited charging access, especially outside urban centers.
Rather than requiring full ownership of high-cost batteries, GOGOโs system allows riders to access charged batteries on-demand through a swap model, reducing wait times and improving operational efficiency. These systems are supported by flexible payment plans developed in collaboration with local microfinance institutions and fintech partners.
Although high entry costs and insufficient infrastructure continue to challenge the sector, GOGOโs approach, combining affordable financing, local assembly, and renewable energy integration positions it to bridge key market gaps.
With over 500 electric motorcycles already deployed in pilot schemes around Kampala, the company now aims to reach riders in underserved rural areas where the benefits of low-cost, clean transport could be transformative.
GOGO is preparing for regional growth, tapping into East Africaโs vast two-wheeler market of over 5 million motorcycles. Transitioning this fleet to electric could result in the avoidance of millions of metric tons of COโ emissions annually while creating jobs across clean energy, transport, and manufacturing value chains.
This strategic capital injection represents more than a business expansion, its consistent with Ugandaโs broader clean energy objectives under its Vision 2040 and the Third National Development Plan (NDP III), signalling confidence in Ugandaโs commitment to lead in homegrown e-mobility innovation and to shape a greener transport future for the region.
